Würzburg at Dusk

Fortress Marienberg looks on Würzburg

A side trip to Würzburg alongside our annual visit to Spielwarenmesse makes a rewarding visit. We arrived in the early evening, which turned out to be perfect timing — the golden hour light along the Main River is something else entirely.

Würzburg sits at the northern edge of Franconian wine country, and the terraced vineyards climbing the hillsides above the river set the scene the moment you arrive. Franconian wine — poured locally in the distinctive flat Bocksbeutel bottle — is reason enough to stop here on its own.

The Alte Mainbrücke reflects in the river Main.

The Alte Mainbrücke is the heart of the city at any hour, but at dusk it becomes something special. The old stone bridge dates to the early 1700s and is lined with twelve life-sized sandstone figures of saints and bishops — each one worth a closer look.

Among the figures, St. Kilian stands out — the Irish missionary who evangelized Franconia in the 7th century and was martyred here. There’s something quietly moving about him standing watch over the river in the fading light.

Looking back from the bridge, Fortress Marienberg looms over the opposite bank — a fortress the Prince-Bishops of Würzburg called home for four centuries. At dusk the whole structure seems to glow against the darkening sky. It is the kind of sight that makes you stop mid-stride.

A short walk from the river, the Residenz is one of the great Baroque palaces of Europe — a UNESCO World Heritage site designed by Balthasar Neumann in the 18th century. The exterior at dusk, lit against a deep blue sky, is as grand as anything in Germany.

Würzburg rewards a slow paced evening. Good wine, old stone, and light that makes everything look like a painting, is sure to be enjoyable. Visiting at dusk is highly recommended if you ever find yourself passing through Franconia.
